Good day, Wren! We finally have some rain happening today and the gardens are enjoying a much needed drink after three dry days. I’ve done some planting and weeding this week but, as you know, with all this hot weather we’ve been having and the regular rainfall this spring, things are growing very fast this year!
I’ve really been enjoying the irises, which are especially tall and vigorous this year, so much so that some varieties are falling over! I’ve been snipping them to put in a vase, with no regrets…
The iris is of course named for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris, who was also a messenger of the gods. What messages are we receiving when we see their sumptuous shapes and lush, limitless colors, and inhale their intoxicating sweet fragrance? Surely they are telling us nature can be a powerful healing balm, even for a fleeting moment of beauty…
This lovely heirloom“Quaker Lady" is especially fetching this year!
Here’s an heirloom I don’t know the same of; the flowers are somewhat small but bold with bright color! I love the “zebra” like markings around the beards…
This one is new in my garden this year, I planted a division from a friend last fall. It’s called “Champagne Elegance” I believe and the name suits it perfectly! So classy. I understand this one is a re-bloomer also, so I’m excited for that!
And how about this stunner! I think it’s called “Painted Clouds.” It’s so ruffly!
This nearly-black one with brown/burgundy markings is called “Superstition” I think…I love black irises! I bought one a few years ago called “Dracula’s Shadow” which was gorgeous, deep black-purple with midnight blue beards, huge and dramatic, but alas, it was left behind when I moved, must get another!
Well, that’s enough for now, but I have more irises to photograph once the rain stops! So this post will have a sequel very soon…until then, enjoy the glorious colors of spring, my friend…
gorgeous! I'll post some pictures of my irises later. They didn't grow as tall as they did last year but still lovely!
